About the Herbert B. Hanes Scholarship Foundation The Herbert Hanes Scholarship Fund offers Ensley Alumni an opportunity to recognize the hard work and dedication demonstrated by student-athletes as they balance academic and sports achievements with a sense of community. This scholarship fund is named in honor of Herb Hanes who was a coach and administrator for 16 years in the Birmingham School System. Coach Hanes was head football coach at Jones Valley and Ensley High Schools from 1956-1965. He was also head baseball and basketball coach at Jones Valley during the 1951-1958. In 1959 and then again in 1964-65, Coach led Ensley to some of its greatest sports years. He won four city and county football championships and one state championship (1961). He also coached in five consecutive Crippled Children Clinic Games. During his tenure at Ensley he established an overall record of 43-13-3, an incomparable winning percentage of 75.7%. Coach Hanes played football at Samford University for three years from 1948-1950. He holds a Bachelor's degree from Samford and a Masters from Peabody. Coach has done extensive work towards his Doctorate. Herbert Hanes is loved and respected by all of his past students and held in high regard by his peers as a man of principle and integrity.
